St Lucia has two airports, one in Vieux Fort, Hewanorra International Airport , in the south of the island, and Vigie Airport in Castries, the capital of St Lucia. International flights land at Hewanorra, while flights from within the Caribbean generally land at Vigie. You can fly direct to St Lucia from the UK, US and Canada .
Cruise ships dock in Castries Harbour.
Flights between the caribbean islands are frequent and reliable. These leave and arrive at Vigie Airport for those looking to do a bit of island hopping. This can also be achieved by using L'Express des Iles which has a regualar return ferry service to Martinique, Guadeloupe and Dominica.
Air passengers leaving St Lucia pay a 54.00 departure tax.
Although St Lucia is a relatively small island (30 miles approx in
length, and 14 miles width) it is quite mountainous with breathtaking
views. However this can slow travelling around the island down. Most
islanders use the cheap, convenient minivan bus service to get to town,
school or work. Services are frequent on main routes (such as Castries
to Gros Islet) during the day, but getting a bus after dark can be
challenging. Very few buses run on Sunday. If there's no bus stop
nearby, you can wave buses down en route as long as there's space for
the bus to pull over.
Car Rental
There are car rental agencies at the airports and at Rodney Bay. You will need to purchase a local tempoary license which is normally valid for three months, which can be picked up from immigration at both Hewanorra International Airport and Vigie Airport. If you don't get a license on arrival, most car rental companies will either issue one or take you to a nearby police station to get one. St Lucians drive on the left just like in the Uk.
